A London tech city map in words: every major hub and cluster from Shoreditch to Battersea, what each is known for, how to get there and where to cowork.

“Tech City” was the name given to East London’s startup cluster back in 2010. Since then the map has spread across the whole city. If you’re choosing an office, planning meetings or just trying to understand how London’s tech scene fits together, it helps to think of it as a set of zones linked by the Tube and the Elizabeth line.

Here is a London tech city map, explained zone by zone.

East: the original Tech City

Shoreditch and Old Street sit at the heart of it. This is where you’ll find the highest density of early-stage startups, venture firms and coworking floors. Nearby Clerkenwell and Farringdon host design-led startups and agencies, helped by Farringdon’s position as an Elizabeth line and Thameslink interchange.

Further east, Whitechapel has a health and life sciences focus thanks to Queen Mary University of London. Stratford is home to Here East and Plexal on the Olympic Park. Our East London tech hub guide covers all of these in depth.

Central: King’s Cross, Fitzrovia and Holborn

King’s Cross is the big success story of the last decade. Google, Google DeepMind and Meta have large offices here, and the wider Knowledge Quarter includes the Francis Crick Institute, UCL and the British Library. It’s the centre of the London AI hub.

Fitzrovia and Euston have plenty of AI, health tech and media startups, many of them close to UCL. Holborn and the City are where legal tech and insurtech companies cluster near law firms and insurers.

Soho is worth a mention too. It has long been home to film, visual effects and post-production studios, and many of those companies are now deep in games, real-time graphics and AI tools.

Docklands: Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf is the fintech zone. Level39, based in One Canada Square, has supported fintech, cybersecurity and smart-city startups for years, and the big banks next door make it a natural base for anyone selling to financial institutions. The Elizabeth line has cut journey times to central London significantly.

South and West

Battersea changed when Apple moved its London campus into the redeveloped Battersea Power Station. London Bridge and Southwark have a cluster of coworking spaces and scale-ups close to the City.

In the west, White City combines Imperial College’s innovation district with media companies, and is a strong area for health tech and life sciences. Paddington and Hammersmith host a mix of corporate tech offices and growing scale-ups.

Where the coworking spaces are

Coworking follows the clusters. The heaviest concentration is around Shoreditch, Old Street, Farringdon and Aldgate, followed by King’s Cross, London Bridge and Canary Wharf. Specialist spaces include:

  • Level39 in Canary Wharf for fintech and cyber
  • Plexal at Here East for innovation programmes and deep tech
  • University incubators in White City, Bloomsbury and Whitechapel for spin-outs

We rank the main options in our guide to the best coworking spaces for London tech teams.

Getting around between clusters

The Elizabeth line has changed the map more than any single development. It links Paddington, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Canary Wharf and Stratford, so a meeting in White City and another in Canary Wharf on the same day is now realistic.

Using the map to choose a base

Start with three questions:

  1. Who do you need to be near? Customers, investors, a university lab or other founders.
  2. Where do your people live? A central interchange on the Elizabeth or Northern line keeps commutes sane.
  3. What can you afford? Zone 1 rents are steep, and moving one or two stops out can save a lot.

If you want a narrative version of this map, our neighbourhood guide to London’s tech hub walks through each area, and the London Tech Hub homepage includes a quick comparison table.
