When people say “London tech”, they usually picture East London. That’s not an accident. The startup scene that put the city on the global map grew up in Shoreditch, and most of the big shifts since then, from the Olympic Park campus in Stratford to the fintech cluster at Canary Wharf, have happened east of the City.

This guide covers the main parts of the East London tech hub in 2026, the workspaces founders actually use, and where to find support.

How East London became a tech hub

In the 2000s, Shoreditch and Hoxton offered something central London couldn’t: big, cheap rooms close to the City. Designers and small web companies moved in first, then startups. In 2010 the government branded the area Tech City and backed a promotion agency, Tech City UK, which later became Tech Nation.

Cheap space is long gone, but the network effect stayed. Investors, accelerators, agencies and meetups cluster here because everyone else does. For a deeper history, read our piece on Old Street and Silicon Roundabout.

The main East London startup areas

Shoreditch and Old Street

Still the densest concentration of early-stage startups in the UK. Expect coworking floors above bars, product launches in converted warehouses and plenty of founders on laptops in cafés. Good for networking, less good for budgets.

Hackney, Hackney Wick and Dalston

Creative tech, studios and smaller teams priced out of Shoreditch tend to drift north and east. Hackney Wick in particular mixes artists’ studios with media and design businesses.

Whitechapel and Aldgate

Queen Mary University of London and the Royal London Hospital give this area a strong health and life sciences flavour. Aldgate’s office blocks are popular with scale-ups that want City access without City rents.

Stratford and Here East

The former Olympic press centre is now Here East, home to the innovation centre Plexal, university campuses and studio space. It suits hardware, gaming, sports tech and any team that needs room to build things.

Canary Wharf

Technically East London too, and the city’s fintech heartland. Level39 has hosted fintech and cybersecurity companies for more than a decade. Our London fintech hub guide goes into detail.

Workspaces in the East London tech hub

Most early teams start in coworking. Shoreditch has the widest choice, from large operators to small, founder-run spaces. Plexal and Level39 are worth a look if your sector fits their focus. Flexible contracts matter more than fancy amenities in year one, so ask about notice periods, meeting room credits and how easy it is to add desks.

We’ve compared options in our list of the best coworking spaces for London tech teams.

Support for East London startups

The East London tech hub sits on top of London’s wider support system. Useful starting points include:

  • Accelerators and pre-seed investors such as Entrepreneur First and Seedcamp, both founded in London.
  • University programmes at Queen Mary, UCL East and other campuses for spin-outs and student founders.
  • Government schemes including Innovate UK competitions and SEIS/EIS tax relief for early investors.
  • Community events, from weekly meetups to big fixtures such as London Tech Week each June.

Is East London still the right base?

For most early-stage founders, yes, but it’s no longer the only answer. AI teams often prefer King’s Cross, health tech can do well in White City, and hybrid working means your office matters less than your network. A sensible approach is to base yourself where your first customers, hires and investors already gather, then revisit the decision once you’ve found product-market fit.
